An Independent Guide

Site Index

Everything published on this site, in one list. The guide is organised into three groups: the seven regional guides, background pages on what these houses are and how they came to be open to visitors, and practical material for planning a journey.

Regional Guides

Seven regions, running roughly north to south. Each page covers the landscape, the towns, the local building tradition and the character of the houses you will find there.

Background

What the houses are, what the words mean, how they are built and how the rural-tourism system that preserved so many of them actually works.

Practical

Getting there, getting between regions and knowing what to expect.

About the Structure of This Site

The regional pages use the address pattern this site has always used, so links made to them over the past twenty years still work. That matters more than it might appear: a great deal of what has been written about Portuguese manor houses in English over that period points here, and preserving the addresses preserves the trail.
